HUD AWARDS VOUCHER FUNDS FOR HOMELESS VETERANS
$484,818 Awarded to Housing Authorities in Biloxi, Gulfport and Jackson
WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Thad Cochran today reported that Housing Authorities in Biloxi, Gulfport and Jackson have been awarded a total of $484,818 in federal assistance to provide rental vouchers for homeless veterans.
The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development awarded the three grants through its Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing (VASH) program. VASH grant funds are used to provide rental assistance for homeless veterans. The grants derive from the FY2010 Omnibus Appropriations Bill.
“This veterans’ assistance program allows local housing authorities to work with VA medical centers to help secure housing for veterans who would otherwise find themselves without shelter,” Cochran said.
The following grants have been awarded to Mississippi:
- $185,457 to the city of Biloxi Housing Authority
- $169,632 to the Mississippi Regional Housing Authority VIII in Gulfport
- $129,729 to the city of Jackson Housing Authority
In providing funding for the VASH program, Congress stipulated that grant funding be distributed “based on geographical need for such assistance as identified by the Secretary of the Department of Veterans Affairs, public housing agency administrative performance, and other factors as specified by the Secretary of Housing and Urban Development in consultation with the Secretary of the Department of Veterans Affairs.”
