COCHRAN’S AGRICULTURE SUBCOMMITTEE ASSIGNMENTS ANNOUNCED

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry on Wednesday approved its lineup of subcommittee memberships for the 112th Congress, including assignments on three panels for U.S. Senator Thad Cochran (R-Miss.)

Cochran, a former chairman of the Committee, will serve on three subcommittees with jurisdiction over issues that range from farm income protection, to conservation, to school nutrition and agricultural research.  In all, the Committee is made up of five subcommittees.

“American agriculture remains a vital segment of the economy in Mississippi, throughout the nation and internationally.  I enjoy my service on this committee and will continue to use subcommittee assignments to advocate policies that improve all aspects of this important industry,” Cochran said.

Cochran will serve on the following subcommittees during the 112th Congress:

Commodities, Markets, Trade and Risk Management:  agriculture crop production; fresh water food production; commodities and products; farm and ranch income protection and assistance, including safety net programs and farm credit; commodity price support programs; insurance and risk protection; agriculture trade; foreign market development; and futures, options and derivatives.

Conservation, Forestry and Natural Resources:  conservation, protection and stewardship of natural resources and the environment; state, local and private forests and general forestry; and pesticides.

Nutrition, Specialty Crops, Food and Agriculture Research:  domestic and international nutrition and food assistance and hunger prevention; school and child nutrition programs; local and healthy food initiatives; food and agriculture research, education and extension.
